In the early 1980s, New Zealand’s exterior cleaning industry was due for a transformation, and Chemwash delivered. Since pioneering the soft washing method in 1981, Chemwash has led the way with a safer, smarter, and more eco-friendly cleaning approach. Rather than relying on harsh, high-pressure blasting, Chemwash uses non-toxic, non-poisonous detergents to do the hard work gently. A Local Family Business Since 1991

Steve and Denise Courtenay saw the opportunity to bring this innovative cleaning method to their community. In 1991, they began their Chemwash journey from their home in Paraparaumu, serving the western suburbs of Wellington. Like many great Kiwi businesses, it began with just the two of them and a big leap of faith.

Two years later, in 1993, they hired their first employee, a clear sign that the demand for safe, quality exterior cleaning was growing. In 1998, Steve and Denise expanded by purchasing the Wellington eastern suburbs branch, taking their commitment further to the region.

By 2000, the daily commute into Wellington had worn thin, so the Courtenays moved to Papakowhai in Porirua City. They worked with the Lower Hutt and Porirua branch for seven years before deciding to focus exclusively on their original branch in 2007.

That same year marked another big step in the Courtenay family journey, Steve and Denise’s son Sam joined the business. Today, Sam is still one of the Directors of Chemwash Wellington, continuing the family legacy and upholding the business’s local values and exceptional service.
